01
Cold Immersion

Cold Plunge

What temperature should I set my cold plunge to?

The evidence-based range for maximum physiological benefit is 50–59°F (10–15°C). This range produces the strongest norepinephrine response, DOMS reduction, and cardiovascular adaptation without unnecessary cold shock.

If you're new to cold immersion, start at 60–65°F and reduce by 2–3°F per week as your tolerance builds. Most practitioners settle between 50–55°F for their regular sessions. The Tempest holds temperature precisely throughout your session — unlike ice baths that warm as ice melts.

Research note: Piñero et al. (2024) and Batista et al. (2023) both identified 10–15°C as the optimal range for recovery benefits. Colder is not always better — consistent exposure at therapeutic temperatures outperforms irregular sessions at extreme cold.
How long should I stay in?

For beginners: 1–3 minutes per session. For regular practitioners: 8–12 minutes per session. Research by Huberman and colleagues suggests approximately 11 minutes total per week spread across multiple sessions is the minimum effective dose for physiological adaptation.

Focus on controlled breathing and staying relaxed rather than maximum time. The cold shock response (first 30–60 seconds) diminishes with consistent practice. Once you can breathe normally through the first minute, you're adapting well.

Does The Tempest need ice? How does the chiller work?

No ice is ever needed. The Tempest has a built-in 1HP integrated chiller that continuously cools and circulates the water. It reaches 37°F and holds that temperature precisely throughout your session.

This is one of the core advantages over ice baths: an ice bath starts at the right temperature but warms continuously as ice melts. The Tempest stays cold from your first second to your last. Fill with tap water, set your temperature, and it's ready.

Can The Tempest also heat the water?

Yes. The Tempest has a temperature range of 36–107°F — it functions as both a cold plunge and a warm soak in the same unit. Some practitioners use it warm in winter or for contrast therapy cycles without a sauna. No additional equipment needed.

How do I maintain water quality?

The Tempest's circulation jets keep water moving, which significantly reduces bacterial growth. General maintenance:

  • Test pH weekly — target 7.2–7.8. Adjust with pH increaser or decreaser as needed
  • Add a small amount of bromine or chlorine sanitizer weekly
  • Rinse off before use to reduce contamination
  • Full water change every 2–3 months with regular use
  • Wipe down the interior with a soft cloth monthly

Daily maintenance takes under 2 minutes. Most users find the water stays clean easily with a simple weekly routine.

Can The Tempest be used indoors and outdoors?

Yes — The Tempest is fully freestanding and designed for both indoor and outdoor use. It runs on a standard 110V household outlet and requires no plumbing, no dedicated circuit, and no permanent installation. Place it in a garage, on a patio, in a wellness room, or on a deck.

If used outdoors in freezing conditions, keep it running at a low temperature setting to prevent damage from freezing. Do not allow the unit to sit empty in below-freezing temperatures for extended periods without winterization.

How much does it cost to run The Tempest?

Electricity cost depends on your local rate and usage frequency. As a rough estimate: a 1HP chiller running intermittently to maintain temperature costs approximately $20–$40/month in electricity at average U.S. rates. Compare this to ice costs — buying enough ice for daily use typically runs $600–$1,000/year. The Tempest pays back the difference in operational savings over time.

Does it come in colors other than white?

Yes. The Tempest is available in multiple colorways. Check the cold plunge collection page for current available options.

02
Heat Therapy

Saunas

What's the difference between the Ember and Solace series?

Ember Series — far infrared saunas for indoor use. Canadian Hemlock construction. Operates at 120–150°F. Near-zero EMF certified. Plug into a standard 110V outlet — no electrician, no construction. 1–3 person capacity depending on model. Best for daily indoor practice.

Solace Series — traditional saunas in two formats: outdoor red cedar (Solace One, Two) and indoor hemlock studio models (Solace Studio One through Six). Traditional heat at 160–200°F — the high-heat range used in the Finnish longevity studies. Outdoor models require a dedicated 240V circuit and a heater add-on purchased separately. Solace Studio indoor models include an electric heater — no separate purchase required. 5-year warranty on outdoor cedar models. Best for serious practitioners who want the authentic traditional experience.

Different heat mechanism, different installation, different experience. Both deliver real physiological benefits — infrared at lower temperatures with gentler penetrating heat; traditional at higher temperatures with the intense heat load that produces the strongest growth hormone and cardiovascular response.

Do the Ember saunas need an electrician?

No. All Ember series saunas plug into a standard 110V household outlet — the same outlet your refrigerator or washer uses. No dedicated circuit, no electrician, no permits required. Plug in and start your first session the same day delivery arrives.

Do the Solace outdoor saunas need an electrician?

Yes — Solace outdoor cedar saunas require a dedicated 240V electrical circuit installed by a licensed electrician before your sauna can be connected. This needs to be in place before or on the day of delivery.

Our optional white-glove installation service coordinates the electrician and handles everything. If you arrange your own electrician, contact us for the correct amperage requirements for your specific model.

Do the Solace outdoor saunas come with a heater?

No — outdoor Solace saunas ship as the sauna structure only. A heater must be selected at checkout as an add-on:

  • Solace One: Harvia 4.5 KW Electric — +$1,500 (requires 240V/20A)
  • Solace Two: HomeCraft Revive 9 KW — +$2,000 (requires 240V/40A)
  • Solace Two: Humm Drop 9 KW WiFi — +$3,000 (requires 240V/40A, enables remote preheat via app)

Solace saunas can also be used with a wood-burning heater if you prefer the traditional wood-fired experience.

How long does the sauna take to heat up?

Ember series (infrared): Infrared heats the body directly rather than heating the air, so you can start benefiting while the cabin is still warming up. Most users begin sessions within 15–20 minutes of startup.

Solace series (traditional): Traditional high-heat saunas take longer to reach 160–200°F — typically 30–45 minutes. The WiFi heater option allows you to preheat remotely via app so it's ready when you are.

What is near-zero EMF and why does it matter?

EMF (electromagnetic field) exposure is a concern with some infrared saunas because the heating elements are close to the body. Near-zero EMF certification means the heating panels in our Ember saunas emit electromagnetic fields well below established safety thresholds.

For daily use — which is how contrast therapy produces maximum benefit — near-zero EMF is an important quality marker. All Ember series saunas are near-zero EMF certified.

How long should a sauna session be?

The Finnish longevity research used sessions of approximately 15–20 minutes per round. Most practitioners do 2–3 rounds of 15–20 minutes separated by cooling periods. Start with one round of 10–15 minutes and build from there.

For growth hormone maximization: two 15-minute sessions at high temperature separated by 30 minutes of cooling produced a 16× GH increase in research settings. Consistency of sessions per week matters more than session duration.

03
Protocol

Contrast Therapy

What is contrast therapy?

Contrast therapy is the deliberate alternation of heat exposure (sauna) and cold immersion (cold plunge) in structured cycles. The alternation creates a powerful vascular pump effect: heat causes vasodilation (blood vessels expand), cold causes vasoconstriction (blood vessels contract). Cycling between these states accelerates metabolic waste clearance, increases oxygen delivery to tissues, and trains the nervous system to switch between stress and recovery states more efficiently.

A 2024 RCT involving 40 combat athletes found contrast therapy produced tissue perfusion of 18.71 ± 0.67 vs 9.79 ± 0.35 perfusion units in sham therapy — nearly double the circulatory response.
What is the optimal contrast therapy protocol?

The evidence-based protocol:

  • Sauna: 15–20 minutes at 150–180°F (Ember) or 160–200°F (Solace)
  • Transition: 2 minutes or less — move quickly between modalities
  • Cold plunge: 8–12 minutes at 50–59°F (10–15°C)
  • Rest: 10 minutes passive recovery
  • Repeat: 2–3 cycles per session

End on cold for alertness and energy. End on heat for relaxation and sleep.

Can I use cold plunge after a workout?

It depends on your goal. If you train for endurance, recovery, or general performance — yes, cold immersion post-workout is beneficial for reducing DOMS and accelerating recovery.

If muscle hypertrophy (size) is a primary goal — avoid cold immersion within 4–6 hours of resistance training. Research by Piñero et al. (2024) confirmed that post-strength-training cold immersion attenuates the hypertrophic signaling cascade. Use cold on rest days, or in the morning before afternoon training sessions.

This is the most common protocol mistake among strength athletes. The cold doesn't eliminate gains, but it measurably reduces the hypertrophic adaptation from each session over time.
How often should I practice contrast therapy?

The Finnish longevity data shows a clear dose-response: more sessions per week produce greater cardiovascular and mortality benefits. 4–7 sessions/week produced the strongest outcomes in 20-year follow-up studies. Even 2–3 sessions/week showed significantly better outcomes than once weekly.

Our recommendation: daily practice if possible. The equipment is in your home — the barrier to consistency is essentially zero.

Should I use cold plunge or sauna first?

Start with sauna. Heat opens blood vessels, relaxes muscles, and primes the body for the cold shock. Going cold first and then warming up in the sauna works but is less physiologically effective for the vascular pump effect.

Exception: if you're using contrast therapy as a pre-workout warmup, cold first → brief heat → cold again can be effective for mental sharpness and alertness going into training.

Is contrast therapy different for women?

Most of the landmark contrast therapy research was conducted on male subjects. A 2025 study (Wellauer et al., PLoS ONE) found that cold and hot water immersion did not accelerate muscle recovery in women compared to passive rest — a result that differed from findings in male subjects.

This doesn't mean contrast therapy is ineffective for women — the cardiovascular, neurological, and longevity benefits appear robust across sexes in other research. It does mean women should monitor their individual responses carefully rather than assuming male-derived protocols translate directly.

Setup

Installation & Setup

How difficult is it to set up The Tempest?

Very straightforward. The Tempest is delivered assembled. You place it where you want it, fill it with water from a garden hose, plug it into a standard 110V outlet, and set your temperature. No assembly, no plumbing connections, no electrician. Most customers have their first session the same day delivery arrives.

How difficult is it to set up an Ember sauna?

Ember saunas arrive in panels and require assembly — typically 2–4 hours with two people following the included instructions. No special tools or skills required beyond basic assembly. Once assembled, plug into a standard 110V outlet and it's ready.

How difficult is it to set up a Solace outdoor sauna?

Solace outdoor cedar saunas are more complex — permanent outdoor structures requiring a dedicated 240V electrical circuit (installed by a licensed electrician), a level foundation or deck, and significant assembly. We strongly recommend our white-glove installation service for outdoor Solace models — scoped and quoted individually for your space.

What space do I need?

The Tempest: 77"L × 32"W × 28"H — fits in most bathrooms, garages, or outdoor spaces.

Ember One: 47"D × 39"L × 75"H — roughly the footprint of a large armchair.

Ember Two: 47"D × 41"L × 75"H — similar footprint, slightly deeper.

Ember Three: 47"D × 60"L × 75"H — needs a dedicated wall space.

Solace One: 83"H × 44"W × 31"D — outdoor installation, requires level ground or deck.

Solace Two: 86"H × 81"W × 86"D — larger outdoor structure, plan for clearance on all sides.

Solace Studio models vary — check individual product pages for exact dimensions.

08
Safety

Safety & Contraindications

Is cold plunging safe?

For healthy adults, yes — with proper precautions. Known contraindications include: Raynaud's syndrome, cold urticaria, unstable cardiovascular conditions, and pregnancy. If you have any cardiovascular or circulatory condition, consult your physician before starting.

Practical safety guidelines: never plunge alone if you're new; don't stay in longer than you planned; don't hold your breath; exit immediately if you feel chest pain, severe cramping, or disorientation.

Is sauna safe for people with heart conditions?

Paradoxically, the data shows frequent sauna use is associated with dramatically lower cardiovascular risk in healthy adults. However, absolute contraindications exist: unstable angina, recent myocardial infarction (within 3–6 months), decompensated heart failure, and severe aortic stenosis.

If you have a diagnosed cardiovascular condition of any kind, consult your cardiologist before starting a sauna practice. Never combine sauna use with alcohol — this significantly increases cardiovascular risk and is a common cause of sauna-related incidents.

Can I use contrast therapy if I'm pregnant?

We recommend against it without explicit clearance from your OB or midwife. Both extreme heat (sauna) and cold immersion create significant physiological stress that may not be appropriate during pregnancy. Please consult your healthcare provider.

Can I use cold plunge or sauna before bed?

Sauna before bed: Generally fine and can improve sleep quality, as the post-sauna temperature drop mimics the natural thermoregulatory process that initiates sleep. Allow 1–2 hours between sauna and sleep.

Cold plunge before bed: Avoid within 2–3 hours of bedtime. The norepinephrine response from cold immersion is activating, not relaxing. Morning or early afternoon is optimal for cold immersion if sleep quality is a priority.
