Cold water immersion triggers a rapid sympathetic nervous system response. Norepinephrine has been shown to increase up to 300–530% above baseline, with dopamine remaining elevated for hours after the session. The cold shock response typically diminishes within 5–6 repeated exposures — a sign the body is adapting. That adaptation is the training effect.
Regular sauna use activates heat shock proteins, expands blood plasma volume, and has been associated with growth hormone increases of up to 87% under controlled study conditions. A long-term Finnish cohort study found that sauna use 4–7 times per week was associated with up to a 63% lower risk of sudden cardiac death compared to once-weekly use.
